Drilling Rigs:Drillig rig construction is not a one horse show

By: Alex De Mostafa

Oil rig construction is a specialized field. It requires unique equipment and specially trained workers. There are two types of drilling rigs, the ones on land and the ones offshore. Both have specialized equipment and training. Oil rigs can be truck mounted. drilling rigs are huge. They have to bore through thousands of feet of dirt. They have large mud pumps that circulate the slurry or drilling mud. This pumps are required to move dirt and keep the drill cool. The mud is sent down the drill pipe to the drill bit. This cools the bit and removes the rock fragments as the oil rig is drilling. At the top of the rig is the crown block. which is used to hoist the drilling equipment. The equipment used to extract the oil/natural gas come later Drilling Rigs. Because of the remote locations of the rigs, a camp is required . All of this equipment can be considered part of the constructions.

Ocean drilling rigs construction needs to provide everything. This includes living space to the equipment required to process crude oil. A platform that is fixed is built on steel or concrete legs that are anchored directly into the seabed. The legs support the deck. The deck has space for drilling rigs, oil production facilities and employee quarters.Their is all so a fixed structure called a compliant tower. It has thin movable towers and a piled foundation that replace the steel legs. Platforms that can be semi-submersible have legs with buoyancy tanks or pontoon-like structures. The platform can be moved as need be. When not in motion they need to be anchored to the sea floor.

Jack-up rigs are the most common drilling platform. The structure is supported by long legs from the ocean floor. The columns or legs can be moved up and down using a hydraulic or electrical system. When the legs are up the rig can be moved to a new location. At the new position, the legs or columns are moved down until they are on the sea floor. Tension-leg platform is moored using tethers or tendons at each corner. A drilling platform that is on 10% above water is called a spar rig. It uses a single vertical cylinder to support a deck. it all so uses a buoy system. Their is a requirement meet by each rig. Utilize by above mentioned oil rig construction.
