Nightclub Safety for the Non-Dummies

By: Vince Kingston

None of us expects to get up one day and see that their entire community has been torn apart by a scorching fire, chemical substance tragedy, catastrophic storm or terrorist action. Nevertheless, we all know, in most cases intuitively, that unanticipated circumstances will and often do happen. And when the unforeseen occurs, sadly most people are not prepared and their lives and material possessions get turned up-side down.

A well-known example: the deadly Station Nightclub fire in Rhode Island was an unprecedented tragedy at a nightclub. Were those nightclub managers prepared to handle the disaster? Unfortunately, no, they did not take the necessary steps to protect their patrons. Additionally, every day violent murders, stabbings and significant brawls go on at nightclubs in communities throughout the country. Can nightclub managers protect their patrons from these tragedies? The answer is dependent upon whether they are proactive enough about their security and if they have effective tools and coaching, but patrons of nightclubs may not always have any clue what security methodologies are being used at a nightclub. So what should patrons do to guarantee their own safety at nightclubs?

Some easy measures you must take:

Are there any obvious signs of danger? For Instance, does the structure of the nightclub appear to be in good condition? Is the primary entrance wide enough and does it open outward to enable easy exit? Has the region immediately surrounding the nightclub been well maintained? What will you do to make contact with the outside world if a calamity takes place? Identify a someone before going out to contact in the event of an emergency.

Do you have a meeting place? Pre-define a meeting place in a well-lighted location outside the nightclub to meet your companions. Then if there is an emergency, make sure to locate them at your predefined location.

Will you be able to escape? Before entering a nightclub scan the facility to identify all available exits. Are the exits simple to find? If the exit paths are blocked, notify the nightclub's supervisors and exit the building if they don't address the matter. Then notify the local fire marshal to submit a complaint.

Do you feel safe? Have the door person permitted too many people inside the venue? Do you see electrical outlets that appear like they have been incorrectly maintained? Are there safety systems in place like sprinklers, security lights and smoke alarms? Is the club an active member of the Club Watch Community Connection violence prevention program? Ask the door person about your concerns. If you do not believe you are safe in the building, leave immediately.

Investing a few moments to learn about the principles we've analyzed in this article will enable you to know what needs to be done if an unanticipated event occurs.
